Company
BP Prosciutti was founded in 2009 through the merger of two historic companies of Modena in the field of production and sale of raw hams, Balugani Prosciutti and Panini Prosciutti, thanks to the synergy of process and product, today BP is excellence in the Italian industry of production of ham in all its cuts.

Balugani Prosciutti has a long history that dates back to 1979, the year in which families Secchi (known hams traders) and Balugani (Balugani brothers were excellent craftsmen and bone removers dedicated to the processing of pork since adolescence) decided to make a company in Castelnuovo Rangone (Modena) that was deboning about 2,000 pieces a week. The company had a strong family background, all the members were in a strategic point of the activity, the work was done manually, and the main products were bone-in and boneless hams. Sales were mainly addressed to the Central and Southern Italy.

In 1990 the technological evolution began with the introduction of machinery for meat processing (deboning machines, automatic gougers, conveyor belts ...) and to increase production, which grew up to 7000 pieces a week, a plant of maturation of Felino (Parma) was bought; Balugani was already a pioneer and started to conquer the foreign market, in particular France, Germany and Belgium. In 1992 there was made the first Cibus exhibition in Parma and then Anuga (Germany), SIAL (France) and Tavola (Belgium); in 1994 Balugani hams reached also South America.

Already at that time Balugani was characterized as a strong oriented towards exports and a strong focused on quality, and in 1994 the company had all the sanitary authorization for export to the U.S. and Japan and every stage of production was subject to a careful quality control (hams control on entry and exit, control of raw material coming from slaughterhouses, code labeling and organoleptic characteristics).

In 1996 a large factory in Montale (Modena) was bought to carry out the production that increased to 20,000 pieces a week.

The growth has then continued up to the present days with product and technological innovation; It’s worth underlining that Balugani was in 1990 the first company to develop the "Mattonella for industrial use," a deboned ham witout the rind of a rectangular shape for slicing industries.

Panini Prosciutti has a similar history of tradition, founded in 1972 by the Panini family of Carpi in Modena, began its activity as a small laboratory deboning hams in the locality of San Marino - Carpi. The family was totally dedicated to the activity, the brothers were respectively involved in production and trade, the mother and sister were responsible for administration and management.

Soon the small plant became inadequate for the development of production and trade that was having the ham factory and in 1994 the decision was made to transfer the activity in the most modern factory in Rovereto sulla Secchia of Novi di Modena, with the most up to date plant and machinery .

Panini Prosciutti began to develop strong sales to Italian mass retailers through an extensive network of agents; already in the early 90's, the company provided ham to major hypermarkets in northern Italy, thanks to the company's flagship product represented by the "Trancio" , a ¼ piece of a deboned ham , practical and functional in domestic consumption.

Turning to medium industry in 1995 Panini began also to internationalize and develop exports to Germany and France to wholesalers and distributor; the attention to quality and the achievement of the most important industry certifications have led to a continuous growth (the production has come up to 1 million hams per year) and expansion (the turnover reached 20 million euro in 2006).

To come to the present day, in the years 2007-2008 a second biggest player in the meat sector in Italy specialized in the purchase, processing and trading of fresh pork legs – Suincom Spa (www.suincom.it) arrives interested in expanding its activity in the world of cured hams, decided to take over companies and to implement a renewal and a structural reorganization in order to compete better compete in the market of cured meats, increasingly competitive.

The policy was now to take advantage of synergies and the contribution that the two companies together could give (and as from 2009, the merger of the two companies in BP Ham), plus the fact that thanks to Suincom you could implement a precise control of the supply chain of cured ham, from the slaughterhouse to the selection of fresh hams put into seasoning till the finished product ready to be sold in supermarkets.

The strategy proved to be successful, so that the BP Prosciutti today turnover is of about € 55 million (2011), and it is present in many countries of the world, among which Europe, Argentina, USA, Australia, Croatia, China and Japan and continues its strong expansion rich of tradition, quality and industrial technology coming in as a strategic partner for the organized distribution chain, industry, catering clients and wholesalers. In order to maintain production efficiency, a high level of quality and safety and planning consistent and timely availability of raw materials, BP Hams today realizes all its production plant in Felino (Parma) and, since 2011, also in the modern Royal Prosciutti plant in Sala Baganza (Parma), both owned by the Group.

Royal Prosciutti is spread over 18,000 square meters of covered area, has a production capacity of about 1 million of curing hams and produces 5,000 of packed hams a day, from classic deboned hams to the ham quarters or Mattonella (ham brick), ready for distribution to customers . Today it’s one of the most modern plants of curing in the province of Parma, in which every week, more than 20,000 fresh legs from the European Community are entrusted to the expert hands of operators that work according to the phases of PDO ham production.

These are the numbers of BP Hams, today one of the leading industry of the Italian delicatessen.
